Mary's Story

Finding Safety in Sue Ryder

Mary and her husband used to run a small garden centre. Then Mary's husband passed away and she could no longer run the business alone.  Not long after Mary had a bad fall and realised she couldn't stay in her home alone. She was considering options like an apartment or smaller house but decided those weren't feasible. She visited Sue Ryder and was immediately impressed by the warm welcome and her beautiful apartment. Looking back, she wishes she had known about Sue Ryder sooner so she and her husband could have enjoyed the services and had more quality time together.

"I had a bad fall which left me with a broken collarbone and hip damage. I had to make a decision, do I stay or do I go? I knew I wouldn't be able to carry on the business or anything like that, so I started thinking well shall I have an apartment in town or a small house, and then I said well I'm not really able for that.

I came with my friend to see Sue Ryder and the first person I saw was Rita and from the very beginning she was so warm and welcoming and you know really nice.  I said well the first part this is going well anyway, so then she took me up to an apartment, and the minute I saw it I said that's it, I'm here, I'm good.

Here's another thing too, had I known about Sue Ryder two years before my husband died, we could have been here. We would have had more quality time, I wouldn't have to cook, that was time I could have had with him, and you know the laundry is there and there's loads of pluses and  certainly, he would have come in with me as well it would have been lovely.

It's so wonderful what happens here..  I'm very happy here."

John's Story

From complete and total loneliness to finding a real community

John, had an active lifestyle and worked in agriculture. Like a lot of seniors he then found himself increasingly lonely living alone in the country. He decided to move to Sue Ryder for companionship and was thrilled with his new apartment.

Well my story is different, I have come from a background where I was involved with agricultural work all my life. I had to come in here because I was living on my own for four years in the country and I had neighbors, but they never visited.  So I was talking to a friend one day in Dublin and said I want to move out of here, and she said "why would you want to move out of a beautiful home" and I said, complete and total loneliness.

She she said why don't you go in to Sue Ryder, and again same story, where is Sue Ryder? She said it's in Carlow town. So I looked it up and I came in, I met Rita and she brought me around showed me the dining room and brought me down to show me a room beautiful room. She said "would you like that?" and we were coming out the door she said "this is yours". I couldn't believe it. (John moved in not long after his initial visit).

We're all a big happy family, that's what makes this place."
