Updated: Nov 22

As the chill sets in this week and in the coming months, let's ensure our seniors are well-prepared for cold snaps in the winter months.

Here are some practical tips to keep elderly family and friends safe, warm, and healthy:

  1. Layer Up: Dress in warm layers. Layers, as we all know, are better trapping our own body heat so keep us warmer. Of course don't forget those cozy warm hats and gloves, and non-slip boots for outdoor ventures!

  2. Home Safety:

    • Keep driveways clear of ice and snow: Help your neighbors and family out with this one.

    • Ensure proper lighting, especially in hallways and staircases

    • Install handrails on both sides of staircases

    • Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and entryways

  3. Stay Active Indoors:

Gentle exercises like walking in place or light chair exercises can help maintain mobility and circulation.

  4. Nutrition Really Matters in Winter: May sure to eat warm, nutritious meals and stay hydrated. Goold old Irish stews and soups are perfect for cold days!

  5. Emergency Preparedness:

    • Keep emergency numbers handym and ask a family member or friend to make sure they are in your mobile phone

    • Make sure you have all your medications in a easy to reach place

    • Make sure to have some non-perishable foods handy for a few days when you can't get to the shops and everybody else is also snowed in.

Personally we love good old baked beans:)

  6. Prevent Falls:

    • Take your time when moving around

    • Use assistive devices like canes or walkers if needed

    • Keep floors clutter-free

  7. Stay Connected: Regular check-ins with family, friends, or neighbours can boost mood and ensure safety.

8. Mind Your Health:

  • Get your flu shot and COVID-19 booster

  • Schedule regular check-ups with your GP

  • Try to keep some humidity in indoor air, which will help with preventing dry skin and maybe even respiratory issues

Remember, winter safety is about preparation and prevention. Let's embrace the season with confidence and care!

Share these tips with a senior you love. Together, we can make all make difference in seniors lives and make this winter safe and enjoyable for all. 💙
